ABOUT THE SITE

Great Wilbraham, which was known by more than 20-some variant spellings, was the site of Wilbraham Temple, a small preceptory located east of Cambridge in open fen country. The manor was given to Brother Alan Martel of the Order in 1226, who was the Master of the Knights of the Temple in England at the time. The original medieval site is now covered by a later house, so is not visible today.

In the village of Great Wilbraham, St. Nicolas' Church can be seen today, which is mainly of the 13th century. "It contains elements which most probably are directly linked with the Templars. In the south transept is a blocked-up archway which seems to have led into a built-on chapel, since demolished. The fine decorative work on the arch ends in a cross at either side, a very rare feature." (1)

For obvious reasons, this church is definitely worth a visit today. The east end of Great Wilbraham is known as 'Temple End'.
